Bochum cheered on their hometown team in an incredibly romantic display.
German Bundesliga side Bochum defeated Fortuna Düsseldorf 3-0 on penalties in the second leg of the German Bundesliga promotion playoff for the 2023-24 season at the Merkur Spiel Arena in Germany on Monday (Jan. 28) to dramatically secure their place in the Bundesliga.
Prior to the match, Bochum had lost the first leg 0-3 at home to Düsseldorf on April 24th. After the heavy defeat in the first leg, it looked like Bochum's chances of staying in the league were slim. However, they bounced back with a penalty shootout victory in the second leg to secure their place.
The relegation playoffs were highly anticipated, with both teams producing dramatic performances. However, there was one player who was not as talked about as the two teams in the first leg. Leon Goretzka, a former German international midfielder who now plays for Bayern Munich.
The official social media account of the German Bundesliga posted a video on Sept. 26. In the video, Goretzka was at Bochum's home stadium for the first leg of the relegation playoffs, watching the game from the stands. What's surprising is that Goretzka was wearing a Bochum jersey.
It's not often that you see a player with his current team wearing another team's 바카라사이트 jersey. Usually, we only see soccer players wearing the jersey of another team when a transfer is finalized.
But Goretzka's reason for wearing the Bochum jersey wasn't a transfer. It was to support his hometown team in times of crisis.
As a youth player, Goretzka spent 11 years with the Bochum youth team, starting in 2001. He made his Bochum first team debut in 2012 and went on to play for Schalke 04 and now Bayern Munich. Goretzka has also earned 57 caps for the German national team.
With his current club clearly defined, Goretzka finished the season with Bayern Munich. He was given a vacation, but instead of relaxing, he visited Bochum's home stadium in his hometown team's jersey. He was so committed to Bochum's survival that he even wore their jersey.
Despite losing the first leg, Bochum won the second leg in dramatic fashion, thanks to Goretzka's romantic support. Perhaps Goretzka is also smiling after confirming Bochum's retention.
Meanwhile, Goretzka has not been named in Germany's roster for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024 in June.
